Message in a Bottle – The Lions Scheme
Overview
The Lions Message In a Bottle scheme is a simple idea designed to encourage people to keep their personal and medical details on a standard form and in a common location – the Fridge. Whilst it is focused on the more vulnerable people in our community, anyone can have an accident at home, so this scheme can benefit anyone, including you.
How You Can Help
By completing the information on the form, it will save the Emergency Services valuable time in identifying the individual and whether they have special medication or allergies or not.
It is not only a potential lifesaver, but also it provides peace of mind to the users, their friends and families in knowing that prompt medical treatment is provided and that the next of kin / emergency contacts are notified.
Where is the bottle kept?
The bottle is placed where the Emergency Services are trained to look, in the refrigerator door. A green cross sticker is placed on the inside of the main door, or where it is considered would be most obvious and another sticker on the door of the fridge. The information provided should include where you keep your medication and latest prescription, contact details, major medical conditions, personal doctor and anything considered necessary that would need attention in those first critical moments.
What information goes in the bottle?
Participants are strongly encouraged to keep a copy of any repeat prescriptions in the bottle, as this will aid Paramedics and any hospital staff to ensure correct drugs are administered in the emergency.
There is also space for you to enter contact details who you would like to be notified in an emergency and even what care might be needed for any pets that you may have.
If more than one person lives in the house only one bottle is needed but each member of the household should complete a separate form that should have a passport size photo attached to aid the emergency services.
What is the cost?
There is NO COST to the user. The costs and distribution is made entirely by Ross-on-Wye Lions Club.
Where can I get a bottle?
Ross Library, Local Pharmacists, Health Centres, and GP surgeries should have bottle kits, i.e. the bottle, a form and stickers.
If you are unable to get hold of a bottle then please get in contact with us and we will supply you with a MIAB kit.
