John Kyrle High School recently held a special Preview Evening for the latest Peace Poster Exhibition at Ross Library in conjunction with Ross on Wye Lions Club. The Exhibition shows the work of Year 8 students and this year the posters are based on the theme of ‘A Celebration of Peace’. This is an appropriate theme as Lions Clubs are celebrating 100 years since they began in 1917. The Peace Poster is part of an International Competition organised by Lions Clubs around the world to encourage young people to reflect on the theme of Peace and International Cooperation.
The Exhibition Opening Night was attended by The Mayor of Ross, David Ravenscroft, Chair of Governors of JKHS Mrs Karen Frost, together with staff of JKHS, Town Councillors, Lions Club members and, most importantly, many parents and friends of the young artists. Winner Lottie Wright was presented with the Peace Poster Competition Trophy and prize by Fiona Walker, President of Ross Lions who also made presentations to Beatrix Attwood and Indianna Sharp who came second and third.
The new Head of Art, Kelly Davies, thanked the staff for their efforts and praised the standard of the Art and the level of thinking that students had put into designing the posters. “Ross Lions thank Miss Davies and all the Art staff for all they have done to promote this competition and Headteacher Mr Griffiths for his support of Ross Lions Youth projects” said Nick Dale, Youth Officer of the Club. He also thanked the Ross Library for hosting this exhibition, which will be there for all to see until the end of January.
